Taxes
Our current federal tax system is an issue that needs to be addressed for creating a basic comprehensive economic strategy. Without a fair tax code, working citizens and entrepreneurs are facing temporary tax policies that cause further uncertainty throughout our economic system and are largely deemed as unfair methods of taxation. Congress has been toying with the American people and stifling progress toward a fair and just tax system because of the lack of political will to change things for the better.
While House Republicans try to hold to their pledge of “never raising taxes,” they have failed to understand that the current tax code will continue to remain a burden for most Americans even if taxes are never raised. This situation that Congress has created is largely due to the lack of fairness within the current system.
In December of 2010, while most House Republicans focused on the politics and political gain surrounding the issue of taxes, Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles and released a report titled “The Moment of Truth.” This report outlined our national needs for fiscal responsibility and reform. Included in that document was a section on tax reform that has largely been over-looked. This Simpson-Bowles tax plan not only lowers our personal tax burden but also makes America “the best place to start a business and create jobs.”
I encourage you to support a revisiting of the progressive tax plan that benefits all Americans, returns fairness to the American people, and helps build the economic certainty back into our national system.
