Social Security Card Protection
Identity theft, illegal foreign workers posing as U.S. citizens, and false social security claims have grown in the past years costing the U.S. millions in losses. Many individuals who have been perpetrating in these crimes have been in possession of an illegally manufactured social security card. Our social security cards are currently easy to replicate and misuse for several different purposes. By simply changing the paper that the social security card is printed on can effectively defeat most criminal activity. If we were to begin issuing social security cards printed on paper similar to Treasury notes, or Treasury paper itself, and adding in a security bar, replication of the social security card would become extremely difficult and punishments would fall under different laws. Individuals that attempt to replicate the card or falsify the information on existing cards can be charged with crimes against the Treasury Department which carry much harsher punishments. This new social security card paper and harsh punishments can act as a deterrent for the criminal activity and offer some protection for citizens against these crimes.
